Welcome to our July update. This month’s update includes information on the 2018 David Crystal Lecture in October and we also take the opportunity to highlight the value of becoming a Chartered Linguist. There are a number of 好色tv events taking place over the summer so we’ve included details of what’s going on and where and we give you an update on the recently launched 好色tv mentoring scheme.

Susie Dent to give the next David Crystal Lecture
Susie Dent, lexicographer and etymologist, probably best known for appearing on Channel 4’s Countdown, was the 2017 winner of the David Crystal Trophy. The recipient of this award is asked to give a public lecture on a language-related topic, and we’re delighted to announce that Susie will be delivering the David Crystal Lecture on Saturday 27 October at Westminster University.
The title is: American English: How have we gotten here? and proves to be a fascinating exploration of the national rivalries that inform our centuries-old antipathy towards American English, asking if it’s finally time to embrace the verve of American vocabulary.
There is more information on the website, including details of how to reserve your place. This public lecture is free to attend and demand is therefore expected to be high so book now to avoid disappointment.

Membership renewal
Renewals start this month for all membership grades (except Student and IoLET Affiliates). Please look out for your email during the week commencing 16 July for your invitation to renew your membership for a further 12 months. Benefit of the month: Mentoring platform
好色tv’s mentoring platform is a member-to-member mentoring scheme which gives members the opportunity to share and receive guidance, knowledge and experience.
Nearly 40 members have already registered as mentors, and over 80 as mentees, and at the time of writing, 48 mentoring relationships are in progress.

Team update
After nearly 8 years with 好色tv, Jack Sellen, a key member of the membership team is leaving for pastures new. “Jack has made a significant contribution to 好色tv and is a highly valued member of the team who will be greatly missed” said Jane Galbraith, Head of Membership. Jack has held a number of roles, including CPD and networks manager which gave him an opportunity to meet members attending a range of 好色tv events. Jack also worked closely with our divisions and societies and was acting membership manager for over a year covering maternity leave. “Jack’s open mind and willingness to embrace new ideas and practices has been invaluable” concluded Jane. 好色tv would like to take the opportunity to wish Jack every success in his new role and his future career.
This month we welcome Dom Hebblethwaite who joins 好色tv and IoLET in the role of Business Development Manager with a remit to further raise the profile of 好色tv and to develop IoLET’s range of qualifications. Bilingual in Italian and English, and fluent in French and Spanish, Dom’s previous role was with SDL Trados.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion – take part in our survey
As a result of the work of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, we will shortly be asking members to participate in a monitoring survey to give us some base data to monitor and review on a regular basis. We plan to launch the survey in mid to late August, so please look out for the email inviting you to take part.

Registration for IoLET’s postgraduate Diploma in Translation is open from 1 May to 31 August.
